An Ode To My Weekly Runs - Finding Solace, Clarity, and Empowerment in Motion

In the fast-paced and demanding world we live in, it is crucial to find moments of solace and rejuvenation. For many, including myself, running has become a therapeutic escape—a sanctuary where the mind finds peace, emotions find balance, and the body finds strength. As a passionate runner and busy professional, I have come to appreciate the transformative power of running in my life. There are few things that I do more consistently or actually enjoy than running.

So many people ask me how do I just go out there and run so much, especially when I’m not training for anything. (I’ve only run 3 short races in the last 10 years.)  I always say, I really don’t know, it just feels right, soothes my soul, and makes me happy. So given, for no reason at all, I’m back on my 100+ mile months lately, I actually decided to really think about it, and wanted to share reasons why I just run. Because I’m curious too.

I’m going to get a little metaphorical, lyrical, and dreamy here, because that’s what running brings out of me. Like my runs, I’m just going to go with the flow.

I’ve joked about this before and added the hashtag to my posts, but I know it to absolutely be true –  running has become my therapy. It allows me to find tranquility, regulate my moods, set and accomplish both personal and business goals, and embrace self-care. It seems to do this for a lot of people. I don’t question it. I’d rather just enjoy it. But maybe if I do take a look at the benefits of running for me, I might even benefit more.

Zoning Out and Finding Inner Peace

When I slip on my running shoes and hit the pavement, an incredible sense of calm washes over me. I really can’t explain it. As I settle into my stride, the world around me starts to fade away, and my focus becomes solely on the rhythm of my footsteps and air around me. (Okay, yeah, I have killer playlists too.) I can’t seem to meditate, but I can run. Running provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from the chaos of daily life and embrace a meditative state. With every step, my mind wanders and clears, creating space for new ideas to emerge and for stress to dissipate. It is during these moments of solitude that I find clarity and perspective, unburdened by the pressures of work or personal life.

Mood Regulation and Emotional Well-Being

Running has a remarkable ability to regulate my moods and uplift my spirits. Research has shown that physical exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, the feel-good hormones that reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. I can actually feel these natural mood boosters flood my system as I simply let go, providing an emotional release and instilling a sense of euphoria. I definitely experience that runner’s high you hear about. Whether I'm having a challenging day or simply need a mental reset, running has the power to transform my mindset, leaving me feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle any obstacle that comes my way.

Treating Myself To Some "Me" Time and Self-Care

As a busy multi-business entrepreneur, finding time for myself can be a challenge. However, running has become a cherished treat—a dedicated slot in my day that belongs solely to me. It is a form of self-care that I prioritize to recharge and rejuvenate. The moments spent on the lakefront, pavement, track, or even the occasional treadmill, are sacred, allowing me to reconnect with my inner self, away from the demands and expectations of the outside world. It is my time to reflect, to dream, and to nourish my mind, body, and soul. Everyone knows when I’m out for my run, don’t call me for anything.

Spiritual Connection

I’ve also found that running has become a gateway to a profound spiritual connection with God. Many times, as I’m running, I feel the presence of a divine force guiding and uplifting me. As my feet touch the ground, I am reminded of the intricate beauty of creation and the miraculous gift of life. I actually spend a significant time on some of my runs praying and talking to God. Thanking Him, seeking guidance, and finding comfort in His presence. I really am so grateful for the ability to run. The opportunity to run. The doggies I get to see during my runs.

Additionally, the simplicity of putting one foot in front of the other becomes a metaphor for the faith journey, where perseverance and trust in God's plan lead to incredible growth and transformation. Now that I think about it, running has actually become a sacred act, an avenue through which I connect with the divine, experience spiritual awakening, and deepen my relationship with God.

Physical and Mental Fitness

I don’t and won’t go running for a workout or as part of a fitness regime. Because to me, running is not about physical fitness; it’s more of a  powerful tool for mental strength and resilience.

Specifically, through my running journey, I have come to realize that the limits I once perceived were often self-imposed boundaries that held me back from reaching my full potential. With every run, I push myself beyond what I thought was possible, breaking through mental barriers and discovering newfound strength. Especially, as I get older. I never thought I would or could run as much as I do. I love to run, but I don’t consider myself a runner. I don’t run on purpose or for a purpose. I just go running. Which sometimes makes my running more of an accomplishment. The determination and perseverance required to maintain a consistent running routine have become valuable lessons that extend far beyond the pavement. As I slip into my sneakers and hit the road, I am reminded that the same discipline and resilience that propel me forward in my runs can be applied to every aspect of my life.

For example, my commitment to running  spills over into my work and personal endeavors, fostering a strong work ethic, improved focus, and enhanced productivity. The same dedication that gets me to log so many miles teaches me the value of consistency and persistence in pursuing my goals. The mental fortitude cultivated through running helps me face challenges head-on, developing resilience in the face of adversity – like when I face that brutal wind off the lakefront. The ability to push through physical and mental barriers during a run instills in me the belief that I am capable of overcoming obstacles in other areas of life.

Likewise, the disciplined mindset honed through running seeps into my daily routine, allowing me to manage my time effectively and prioritize tasks. The focus required to maintain a steady serene pace  translates into heightened concentration and improved performance in my professional endeavors. As I set and achieve running goals, whether it be increasing my mileage, consistently running negative splits on my way back, or running in all weather conditions, I gain the confidence to set ambitious goals in my career and personal life, knowing that with determination and perseverance, I can conquer them.

Actually, running has become a metaphor for life itself, reminding me that success is not solely measured by the finish line, but by the growth, resilience, and self-discovery experienced along the way. And while many times I just zone out during my runs, the lessons learned from running have transformed my perspective, pushing me to break free from self-imposed limitations and embrace the boundless possibilities that lie before me. It is through running that I have learned the true power of determination, perseverance, and discipline, guiding me to unlock my full potential and thrive in all areas of life. Cheesy, but true.

Oh, and I do recognize and appreciate the physical benefits of running, such as increased cardiovascular health and improved stamina, which of course, contribute to an overall sense of well-being, boosting confidence and self-esteem.

Empowering Goal Setting and Achievement

One of the most empowering aspects of running is the ability to set and achieve new goals. Which at one point included completing a marathon, setting a personal best time, or conquering a challenging trail. (Now, I do sometimes get real serious about making sure I get my coveted Nike Run Club trophies and badges.) I admit, each accomplishment fuels a sense of achievement that extends far beyond the running realm. And although I don’t really run races anymore, it’s the joy of the simple everyday challenge that pushes me beyond my comfort zone and has a direct correlation to my ability to set and achieve goals in my personal and professional life. I mean, regardless of how euphoric it makes me feel, I still have to get out there and actually run. And I run all year long against the consistently inconsistent Chicago weather. Just because the routes may stay the same, who and what is on the road changes daily. I’m dodging or weaving through beach goers, walkers, bicyclists, skaters, etc. And again, the biggest obstacle of them all – that wind off the lake. Relentless! I have been slapped and pushed coming and going. Plus, there’s this one hill on my run, I love just pushing myself to actually run (and not unconsciously glide) every time. It’s such a fun game. I look forward to it every time. That hill is my arch enemy and bestie at the same time. That wind? Enemies only. Especially since it’s nowhere to be found when it’s 1000 degrees outside in the summer.

Okay, running off the trail here…

In a nutshell, running teaches me the value of perseverance, commitment, adaptability, and resilience, qualities that are essential for success in any endeavor.

By setting ambitious running goals and working diligently to achieve them, I've developed a mindset that carries over into my professional life. The determination and discipline required to conquer new running milestones motivate me to approach my business goals with the same tenacity. I've discovered that the satisfaction derived from accomplishing a running goal strengthens my belief in my capabilities, propelling me to set even higher benchmarks in other areas of my life. Even if that goal is to just survive the wind (and/or wind chill) for that day.

Wrapping this up…

Life is beautiful and it is also a boiling hot lemon launcher. At either time, running has emerged as my therapy—a sanctuary where I find solace, clarity, and empowerment. The ability to zone out and immerse myself in the present moment, coupled with the mood-regulating effects of the innate existence as actual exercise, make running a powerful tool for maintaining emotional well-being. Furthermore, running grants me invaluable "me" time, allowing me to recharge and prioritize self-care. I enjoy connecting with and showing gratitude to God. The physical and mental fitness benefits, combined with the empowering nature of goal setting and achievement, make it an essential practice for achieving holistic success.

In the simplest terms, all I care about is that running makes me happy, and that’s enough reason for me. I understand it’s not for everyone. At times, it wasn’t for me either. But if it is your thing, as a seasoned runner or newbie, when you are looking for a little peace of mind and instant joy, I encourage you to lace up your shoes, hit the pavement, and experience the transformative power of running for yourself. See you out on the road. I’ll happily give you a quick wave!
